The kitchen is the most used and most expensive space to remodel per square meter. A practical guide to layout, dimensions, materials and lighting so it works as well as it looks.
A kitchen packs plumbing, wiring, millwork, appliances and finishes into a few square meters. That's why it's the space where a design mistake shows every single day. These are the points worth solving before asking for quotes.
1. Start with how you cook
Does one person cook, or several at once? Do you eat in the kitchen or the dining room? Do you need room for gatherings? The answers decide whether an L, U, galley or island kitchen suits you.
2. Respect the work triangle
Sink, cooktop and refrigerator form the work triangle. Too far apart and you walk too much; too close and there's no room to prep. Leave free counter space between them, especially next to the cooktop and the sink.
3. Mind the clearances
Between an island and the opposite counter, about 1.00 to 1.20 m is recommended so two people can work and oven and dishwasher doors open freely. An oversized island in a small kitchen becomes an obstacle.
4. Plan storage from the start
Deep drawers in base cabinets are more comfortable than doors with shelves. Plan a pantry, a spot for small appliances and a fixed place for trash and recycling.
5. Choose materials for use, not just the photo
- Countertops: quartz and sintered surfaces resist stains and heat better than many porous natural stones.
- Cabinet fronts: matte finishes hide fingerprints; glossy ones reflect light but show marks.
- Floors: they must handle water, grease and heavy traffic.
6. Light in layers
A single ceiling fixture leaves shadows right where you work. Combine general lighting, under-cabinet lights over the counter and decorative pendants over the island or dining area.
7. See it before you buy
Before ordering the millwork, review the kitchen in a render with the real materials: proportions, colors and how countertop, fronts and floor work together. It's the best moment to change your mind.
A well-designed kitchen doesn't just look better: it makes every day at home easier and adds value to the property.
